Old Montreal Walking Tour

On May 10, 2017 wwe had a very enjoyable tour of the Place d’Youville area of Old Montreal that is offered by the Centre d'histoire de Montréal. Due to its popularity, another tour will be offered in September.

This event will be held in connection with the 375th anniversary of Montreal.

The year 2017 marks the anniversary of the 100th birthday of the Queen of Jazz and First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald. Local singer Ranee Lee will pay her a vibrant tribute by performing some of her greatest hits such as Mack the Knife, Cheek to Cheek and Summertime. We have received a group rate of $24.75 (tax incl., Parterre section). Payment will be by either PayPal or cheque.

First annual Christmas luncheon

Our first Christmas luncheon will be held at the École des métiers de la restauration et du tourisme de Montréal that is conveniently located on De Maisonneuve near St. Mathieu street. We are hoping to have it the first week of December.

Water, Agriculture & Food Security
Tuesday, June 6, 2017


MAUT-RS and MURA co-hosted a spring luncheon/lecture in the ballroom of the Faculty Club. Over twenty members gathered to hear James McGill Professor of Bioresource Engineering, Chandra Madramootoo, talk about the critical importance of water, its scarcity, and the need to improve irrigation to enhance food production on the world scale. Annual General Meeting
June 1, 2017


About 60 members attended the second AGM where they learned about MURA events and activities, and enjoyed a very informative presentation by Yves Beauchamp, the new Vice-Principal (Administration & Finance) on the proposals for the Royal Victorial Hospital. This was followed by a very cordial reception where everyone met with colleagues and celebrated MURA's second year. Photos
   
Walking Tour of Old Montreal
May 10, 2017

MURA members and friends gathered on May 10th at the Centre d'histoire de Montréal, Place d’Youville, for a guided walking tour of Old Montreal. The guide, Tyler Wood, B.A. History, McGill, gave a captivating presentation with many details about the history of Montreal and the daily life of Montrealers during the 18th and 19th centuries. Some members enjoyed a delicious lunch before the tour at the L'Arrivage restaurant at the Pointe-à-Callière Museum.  Photos 

 

Campus Café Concert

Over 40 MURA members gathered at the Schulich School of Music for the Campus Café & Concert event. Gili Loftus and Hank Knox played a remarkable four-handed harpsichord rendition of works by Bach, Handel, and Mozart. Everyone enjoyed getting together and having a particularly delicious luncheon, thanks to caterer, Emma Cerulli. From all accounts, the MURA Spring event was a big success! Photos
   
Sustainable Communities Workshop

David Kalant Ph.D., McGill retiree, former MUNACA VP, currently member of the Beaconsfield Environmental Advisory Committee (BEAC) and MURA member shared his experiences with that Committee. Among topics he covered were reducing waste that goes into landfills, effective recycling and reusing, composting programs, and exploring alternative energy sources for that municipality to reduce costs and GHG emissions.

Almost 50 MURA and MAUT-RS members attended the lecture/luncheon held in the billards room at the Faculty Club. They were treated to a very enlightening talk by Professor Harold Waller of the Department of Political Sciences, that delved into the intracacies of the US presidential election and its impact on Canada. His vast knowledge of American history and policies provided illuminating details about why the current election has become so provocative.  Photos
   
Homecoming Reception & Concert
October 28, 2016

Over 45 MURA members enjoyed reconnecting with each other and meeting new members at this year's Homecoming Reception and Concert. They were warmly received by our host, Interim Dean Julie Cumming of the Schulich School of Music, and heard Kelly Rice’s very engaging presentation on the work of the great composer Gustav Mahler. The McGill Symphony Orchestra gave an outstanding rendition of Mahler’s 9th Symphony with maestro Alexis Hauser and his hundred student musicians providing a breathtaking finale of the IV movement, finishing to thunderous applause!  Photos

Members of the McGill Association of University Teachers (MAUT) and MURA enjoyed a luncheon/lecture with their colleagues at the beautiful Tadja Hall (Macdonald Campus Faculty Club) located on the shore of Lac-St-Louis. Professor Viacheslav I. Adamchuk, Associate Professor, Department of Bioresource Engineering, at the MAC campus, gave an extremely informative presentation on "Smart Agriculture.”  Photos

Health and Dental Insurance Plans
for McGill Retirees Workshop

Twenty members attended this workshop that focused on prescription drug coverage, emergency travel assistance and changes to the medical and dental coverage for McGill retirees after June 1, 2016. The leaders were Katherine Mayhew and Nicholas Acheson.

Facebook Workshops

Due to the success of the Facebook workshop held last December, two more were held in March. MURA members enjoyed the introductory workshop 101 in the morning, while other colleagues actively participated in the advanced 201 session in the afternoon.
 
   
   
Spring Concert
March 22, 2016


Over 40 MURA members and friends attended a concert at Tana Schulich Hall of the winners of the chamber music competition. The concert was preceded by coffee and pastries and followed by a delicious luncheon at the Schulich School of Music.  Photos
   

  

Holiday Season Luncheon

Over 50 members of MURA & MAUT’RS thoroughly enjoyed a Christmas luncheon and a delightful talk by Professor Nathalie Cooke, Department of English, held in the Ballroom of the Faculty Club. Homecoming Reception & Concert
October 23, 2015

MURA's held its first annual Homecoming Week Reunion. There was a reception from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. followed by a concert; both took place in the Schulich School of Music. Our guest speaker, Derek Drummond, delighted us with his usual wit during the reception.  The concert that followed “A Celebration in Art Song” was a pure delight.  Over fifty colleagues gathered for this very successful event.
