MURA Happy Hour

Members’ response to the first MURA Happy Hour via Zoom was overwhelming!  Twenty colleagues from three provinces, Quebec, Ontario and all the way to Richmond, B.C. gathered to chat about COVID-19, habits during confinement, and life in general.  Due to the success of this first “5 à 7”, the next session will be held on Wednesday, June 3rd starting at 5PM.

Please confirm your participation by responding to this email. You will receive an invitation to join the session during the afternoon of the meeting. If you have not used Zoom before, training is available on request.

Links for Information, Entertainment

McGill Alumni has added a new section to its website called McGill Checks In that provides timely insights from McGill experts, news, events and discussions on how the virus is impacting our global community.

In addition, our colleague Kathy Mayhew sent along a document that includes links to free concerts, opera, and museums, online courses etc. to help while away some time without violating social distancing rules. You can view these informative links here.

May 15, 2020

Dear Members,

As Provost Chris Manfredi announced this week to the McGill community, the University will resume its academic activities fully in September, albeit virtually. Consequently, we are anticipating that many of MURA’s activities and events in the fall will also have to be held virtually and are in the process of developing a Virtual Program of Events. More details regarding MURA’s fall program will be available shortly.

In the meantime, MURA would like to launch a new activity online: Happy Hour or a 5 à 7 to give an opportunity for members to virtually congregate and chat about their experiences, struggles and triumphs during confinement over a glass or two of wine. The first meeting, which will be held on the Zoom interface, will take place on Thursday, May 21st at 5:00 pm. Those who wish to join in are invited to RVSP to mura-arum.association@mcgill.ca by May 20. In response, you will receive an invitation to the meeting along with signup instructions that may be useful if you are not familiar with the Zoom interface.

Regarding the other group activities, we are pleased to report that the Book Club and the Cercle de lecture are active via Zoom. If you have new activities you would like to launch online, we would be pleased to support you.

One of our popular regular activities, the Biking Club, may be able to operate while respecting social distancing. We are considering whether or not to start up the biking season next month when we should know a little more about the Government’s gradual opening up plans.

The Annual General Meeting, originally set for June 3rd, is postponed to Wednesday, September 9th at 1:00 pm, as arrangements have to be made for a suitable videoconference program for the over 50 participants.

Finally, MURA is in the midst of its first elections to the Board.  We are pleased that the Nominating Committee identified eight (8) colleagues who accepted to be candidates for the four (4) seats available on the 2020-2021 Board.  The voting began on April 26th and will continue to be held online until May 26th, 2020.  The OpaVote online voting program was used to send you a message with a ballot.  A reminder will be sent on May 20th, 2020 to make sure that everyone who wishes to take advantage of the opportunity to vote can do so.  Thank you to all the members who have casted their votes already. The results will be announced on June 3rd.

Do keep safe and well!
