MURA Fall Reception
Wednesday, November 4, 5 - 7 p.m.

Members are invited to a discussion presented by Henry Mintzberg, Cleghorn Professor of Management Studies, and his daughter Susie Mintzberg, McGill PhD candidate, Social Work. This will be followed by a wine & cheese reception.

Topic: Looking Down–Reaching Out: The University in the 21st Century

Henry and Susan Mintzberg, from two fields (management and social work), in two roles (faculty and doctoral candidate), and as two generations (father and daughter), contrast two perspectives of the contemporary university: looking down from the Ivory Tower and reaching out like an octopus. Four aspects of these are considered:

  • Educating (autonomous teaching/social learning)
  • Researching (proving/exploring)
  • Disseminating (closed/open)
  • Organizing (leadership/ communityship)
Discussion will center on how universities in the 21st Century can blend these perspectives
